A Diego Rivera in Naxos (Summer 2018)

WD mural Alyko Naxos 2018

Last month - June 2018 - saw the appearance of stunning murals, painted by Indonesian street-artist WD (which seems to stand for "Wild Drawing") on the walls of the derelict shell of what was supposed to become, in the 1970s, one of grandest luxury hotels in the Mediterranean, at Alyko, on the Island of Naxos, Greece, maybe the best Greek ruin of the 20th century, a monument to grandiose shattered dreams, political compromissions, and dubious legal and business practices.

WD has painted murals in Greece, the Netherlands, Sweden, Canada, Germany, Finland, Malta, as well as in his native Indonesia. His earlier work can be seen here. I know nothing more about him. On June 27th, friends told me that he had still been painting at Alyko the week before, I went there in the morning of the 28th and took these pictures...
